Purchase Your Council House
If you've been a council house tenant for between 2 and 5 years you might qualify for the right to buy scheme. The discounted house buying scheme is targeted at long term council tenants and gives everyone who is eligible the chance to become a homeowner. Once you apply for the chance to own your council home and are (hopefully) accepted, you'll be sent a section 125 notice. This is an important document describing the value of your property and what discount you'll get off the Open Market Value (or OMV for short). This will depend on the area you are living in and will be anywhere between £16,000 and £38,000. Mrs D. Hughes from Chester-le-Street managed to buy her council flat for £30,000 cheaper than the market value.
Once you know how much you need to pay for your council property you can get a Right To Buy mortgage. Only certain mortgage companies will lend on a RTB mortgage (big banks like Barclays or Intelligent Finance) so it may be prudent to go to a RTB mortgage broker who should guide you in the right direction. The whole RTB procedure should take just a few months to complete.
